MATH

Math, known for being one of the most notorious subjects at school because of its difficulty and teachers. To really break through mathematics you need good critical thinking and problem solving.

The study of logical reasoning, and finding patterns are essential for math and really important when doing linear equations and graphs. Intense focus is usually needed because in most math problems if one part is wrong, the whole part is wrong. Today, mathematics is used throughout the world as an essential tool in many fields, including natural science, engineering, medicine, and the social sciences. Applied mathematics, the branch of mathematics concerned with application of mathematical knowledge to other fields, inspires and makes use of new mathematical discoveries and sometimes leads to the development of entirely new disciplines.

Mathematicians also engage in pure mathematics, or mathematics for its own sake, without having any application in mind, although practical applications for what began as pure mathematics are often discovered later.

8. It takes 3 hours for 2 identical printers to print a        batch of reports. How long would it take 6 of these     same printers to print an identical batch?

  1 hour.

9. A brother and sister are saving money. The brother says, "If you give me $5, we will have the same amount." The sister replies, "But if you give me $5, I will have twice as much as you." How much money does each one have?

he brother has $25, and the sister has $35.

10.  A number is equal to its own square minus 42. If you take the reciprocal of that number, you get a value that is 1 less than the original number. What is this number?

11.  From a point on the ground 50 meters away from the base of a tree, the angle of elevation to the top of the tree is 30°. What is the exact height of the tree? Later, a bird lands on the very top, and the angle of elevation becomes 45°. How far did the bird fly horizontally from its previous position directly towards the tree to cause this change? (Assume the bird was at the same height as the tree top before its flight).

The bird was originally 50m away and is now (50√3 / 3)m away. So the distance it flew horizontally is 50 - (50√3 / 3) = (150 - 50√3)/3 = (50(3 - √3))/3 meters.

12.  A mysterious function, f(x), has a derivative (rate of change) given by f'(x) = 2x. We know that the area under the curve of f'(x) from x = 0 to x = 3 is 9 square units. What is the value of f(3) - f(0)?
